Introductory Motivational Interviewing (MI) Training (13 CE Hours)

This training will be facilitated by MINT Trainer, Sarah Gainey, MSW, LISW-CP/S, and meets NC service definition training requirements.
Participants will:

Understand the “spirit,” key principles and theoretical basis of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and apply to one’s own practice
-
Learn and practice effective communication techniques such as open-ended questions, reflective listening, summaries, and affirmations
-
Assess and understand how to integrate interpersonal style with primary skills for evoking intrinsic motivation in clients
-
Help clients navigate and resolve ambivalence
-
Gain expertise in identifying and amplifying "change talk," which includes statements indicating a client's motivation, commitment, and reasons for change
-
Practice MI skills and receive feedback

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, guiding method of communication and counseling to elicit and strengthen motivation for change.
The Primary Goals of Motivational Interviewing:
1. Minimize resistance with clients
2. Create and amplify from the client's perspective a discrepancy between present behavior and behavior goals and values
3. Explore and resolve ambivalence
4. Elicit "change talk"
5. Set in motion the client's natural potential for behavior change
Types of training include:
